Night illumination year-round, the Himeji Port Festival in September, cherry blossom season dates for 2027, and the complete annual events calendar.
Himeji Castle is illuminated in white light from sunset until midnight every night of the year โ one of Japan's most reliably spectacular heritage nightscapes. Special 15-minute light performance shows run at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM nightly. The best viewpoints are from Otemae-dori (the main approach boulevard) and the outer Sannomaru grounds, both free to access.
No booking required. Admission to view the illumination from the outer grounds is free. The paid inner area is closed after standard hours except during special events.
โ ๏ธ Note on 2026 events: Most major spring festivals โ cherry blossom illumination (March 27โApril 5), the Castle Festival (May 22โ24), and the Koko-en Senka Exhibition (June 14โ28) โ have already passed as of June 30, 2026. The next confirmed upcoming event is the Himeji Port Festival in September. We will update this page as autumn and winter events are confirmed.
An annual summer-end festival at Himeji Port, approximately 15km south of the castle, drawing tens of thousands of visitors for waterfront celebrations. The festival features food and craft stalls, cultural performances, traditional music and dance, and culminates in a large fireworks display over the harbour. A popular way to round off a Himeji day trip.
For reference and for planning 2027 visits, the following events ran in the first half of 2026:
Annual nighttime illumination of the castle's cherry blossoms in late March to early April. The event runs 18:30โ21:00 and floods the 1,000+ cherry trees on the castle grounds with warm lighting โ one of the most atmospheric experiences Himeji offers. Paid admission: ยฅ600 adults, separate from daytime castle admission. Returns approximately the same dates in 2027 subject to bloom timing.
Free daytime festival in the outer Sannomaru grounds celebrating cherry blossom season, with food stalls, traditional craft demonstrations, and live performances. Open to all without admission charge (castle entry still requires a ticket). One of the most accessible Himeji events for families and budget travellers. Returns late March 2027.
The annual Himeji Castle Festival is one of Hyogo Prefecture's largest traditional events. The 2026 edition (76th) featured Takigi Noh (outdoor fire-lit Noh theatre), the Senhime Bridal Procession through the city streets, Yosakoi dance performances, and a historical samurai parade. All outdoor festival events are free to attend. Noh performances may require advance registration. Returns May 2027.
Annual Golden Week celebration at Engyoji Temple atop Mt. Shosha โ the 1,000-year-old temple complex featured in The Last Samurai and accessible by ropeway from Shoshazan Ropeway Station. The festival combines traditional Buddhist ceremonies, guided temple walks, and cultural demonstrations among the vivid spring foliage. A popular combination day-trip with Himeji Castle.
One of Japan's three great yukata (summer cotton kimono) festivals, held in Himeji city centre in mid-June. Tens of thousands of participants dress in yukata for street food markets, live music, traditional dancing, and a marketplace stretching across the main streets. A culturally distinctive event that distinguishes Himeji from most tourist itineraries. Returns mid-June 2027.
The following recurring events can be expected at approximately the same time each year. Exact dates for 2027 are confirmed closer to the event.
